Twisted Trunk Ficus Bonsai

Ficus is the most popular indoor bonsai for good reason: it tolerates indoor air, bounces back from the occasional missed watering and grows quickly enough to reward regular trimming. This tree has a dramatic twisted trunk that gives it character from every angle, topped with a full canopy of small glossy leaves.

Twisted Trunk Ficus Bonsai care at a glance

• Location: Keep it indoors in a warm room, away from heaters and cold drafts. It can spend summer outside in light shade.
• Light: Place it in bright light near a window. A little morning sun is welcome.
• Water: Water when the top of the soil feels dry, soaking until water drains from the bottom. Do not let it sit in water.
• Humidity: Mist the leaves now and then or stand the pot on a pebble tray, especially in winter.
• Pruning: Trim new shoots back to two or three leaves once they have grown six to eight leaves to keep the canopy dense.
