Five habits that keep most houseplants thriving

Push a finger into the soil: if the top 2-3 cm are dry, water slowly until it drains from the bottom, then tip away any water left in the saucer. Too much water kills far more houseplants than too little.

Leafy tropicals like monstera and rubber plants want bright light without harsh midday sun. Cacti, succulents and bonsai enjoy a sunny windowsill, while snake plants, ZZ plants and pothos tolerate dimmer corners.

Most houseplants are happiest between 18-24°C. Keep them away from heaters and cold drafts, and group tropical plants together or use a pebble tray in winter when indoor air gets dry.

Feed with a half-strength liquid fertiliser every two to four weeks from spring to late summer. In autumn and winter growth slows, so skip feeding until new leaves appear again.

Roots circling the pot or growing out of the drainage holes are your cue. Repot in spring into a pot only 2-5 cm wider, using fresh mix suited to the plant, and water well afterwards.
