Their needle-like foliage grows in soft, layered pads, and they respond well to pinching and light pruning, which makes them the perfect tree to learn on. • Location: Junipers are outdoor trees. Keep yours outside year-round and bring it indoors only for a day or two to show it off.
• Light: Give it at least four to six hours of direct sun a day.
• Water: Water thoroughly whenever the surface of the soil starts to dry. Shallow bonsai pots dry quickly, so check daily in summer.
• Winter: The tree needs a cool winter rest. During hard freezes, move it to a sheltered spot such as an unheated garage or against a house wall.
• Shaping: Pinch back long new shoots in spring and summer to keep the foliage pads compact. Repot every two to three years in spring.
